2. How a society changes its own
habits
Each mechanism on its own would be a
marketing programme. The four together work
as an engine, because each compounds the
others, and in operation they are inseparable.
Chapter 1 named the three abstract components of
the feedback loop. This chapter turns them into four
concrete operating mechanisms; the engine, and
shows how they fit together. This engine is the
reusable core of the entire book. It does not change
from program to program. What changes, later, is
only the single verified action at the top of the
funnel. Learn the engine once here and every
program chapter in Part Two becomes a short
configuration of these same four mechanisms.
Mechanism one, the loyalty economy as on-ramp
A citizen performs a verifiable civic action. They
submit a photo or a short clip; the system verifies it;
they receive points redeemable at participating local
businesses. A free coffee at a corridor café, a
discount at a salon, a dessert with dinner. The points
are small, and they are not the reason the behaviour
persists. They are the wrapper that makes the very
first action low-friction enough to happen at all. The
loyalty economy exists to get the citizen past the
