A father wants to "invest" ₹3 lakh for his daughter's college fees due in 18 months. Equity is wrong regardless of how well the market is doing. An FD maturing just before the fees are due is right. The same father's ₹3 lakh for his own retirement in 20 years is the opposite case.
Deposits protect capital and deliver a known return; their weakness is inflation over long periods. Equity grows with business over long periods; its weakness is unpredictability over short ones. Match the strength to the horizon.
