A family wants something for a 3-year goal, better than savings but without stock risk. A short-duration debt fund holding high-quality paper fits. A "credit risk" fund that lends to weaker companies for higher yield does not, despite the similar label.
Two risks: credit (the borrower defaults) and interest-rate (bond prices fall when rates rise; longer bonds fall more). Liquid and overnight funds hold very short paper and barely move. Long-duration funds move with rates. Tax treatment of debt funds has changed in recent years; check current rules.

Chasing the debt fund with the highest past return. that is usually the one taking the most credit risk.
For retirees comparing with cooperative deposits, the comparison is not only return but liquidity and insurance status.
3-year goal ₹5 lakh: short-duration fund of high-quality paper, expected 6–7 percent, low volatility. Avoid a credit-risk fund yielding 9 percent with the chance of a sudden 10 percent loss.
For money needed next month, a savings account or liquid fund is enough. For money needed in 15 years, debt alone will not beat inflation by much.
