Answer Book question
Yes. Every EPF member is automatically covered by the Employees' Deposit Linked Insurance scheme, paid entirely by the employer. If a member dies while in service, the nominee receives between ₹2.5 lakh and ₹7 lakh, calculated from the last 12 months' wages and PF balance. Since July 2025, even members with under a year's service get at least ₹50,000, a gap of up to 60 days between jobs does not break cover, and a death within six months of the last contribution still qualifies if the member was on the rolls. Nobody enrols you; nobody tells you; the family has to claim it with Form 5-IF alongside the PF claim.

A 34-year-old supermarket supervisor in Thiruvalla earning ₹18,000 basic dies in a road accident. His wife claims the PF balance, ₹1.1 lakh. Nobody tells her about EDLI. The benefit due, at the ₹15,000 wage ceiling, is the maximum ₹7 lakh. It sits unclaimed until someone reads the rules.
5% of wages (capped at the ₹15,000 wage ceiling). 5 lakh bonus. 5 lakh. The February 2025 CBT decisions, notified in July 2025, added the ₹50,000 floor for under-one-year members, the 60-day bridging rule, and the six-month post-contribution window. Employers can substitute a group policy only if it pays at least as much. Claims go through the employer's attestation (or without it, with a gazetted officer's attestation) on Form 5-IF, together with Form 20 (PF) and Form 10D (pension).

Claiming PF and pension and never filing 5-IF. EDLI is a separate form and a separate payment. Also: the nominee on the PF form is who gets it; an old nomination naming a parent rather than a spouse causes real disputes.
Kerala's private-sector workforce in shops, hospitals, schools and plantations is largely EPF-covered and rarely told of EDLI. Families of returnee NRIs who took an Indian job late in life should check: a death within the first year now pays at least ₹50,000, and within the first year with 12 months' service elsewhere, the full calculation.
Average wages ₹15,000 (ceiling), average PF balance ₹4 lakh: Formula A: 35 × 15,000 = ₹5.25 lakh + 50% of ₹4 lakh capped at ₹1.75 lakh = ₹7 lakh. Formula B: 30 × 15,000 = ₹4.5 lakh + ₹2.5 lakh = ₹7 lakh. Payment: ₹7 lakh. Wages ₹9,000, PF balance ₹60,000: A = 3.15 + 0.3 = ₹3.45 lakh; B = 2.7 + 2.5 = ₹5.2 lakh. Payment: ₹5.2 lakh.
Death after leaving service and not joining another EPF employer within 60 days, or more than six months after the last contribution, is outside EDLI. Retired members are not covered. Self-employed people have no EPF and therefore no EDLI; a term policy is the substitute.
