14. Eighty-odd situations, one
machine
The abstract case for the engine is made in Part
One and configured in Part Two. This chapter is
for the reader who wants to see it operate, again
and again, in different towns, on different
behaviours, until the pattern is unmistakable.
Each vignette below follows a compact form: the
situation, the verified action at the top of the funnel,
the loop that closes around it, the likely result, and,
where it matters, the control or the cost. They are
on purpose short and by intent many. Read three or
read all of them; the point is the same machine,
recognisable every time, under a different sky. The
vignettes are grouped loosely by program, but a
reader will notice the structure repeating across the
groupings, which is exactly the intended effect.
Cleanliness and waste
1. The fish-market corner that cleaned itself
Vypin, Ernakulam · Clean Kerala
Situation. A fish-market corner that was reliably filthy
by mid-morning, despite daily sweeping.
Action. Vendors and shoppers photograph segregated
disposal at a new pod; the classifier verifies category and
location.
