What each mechanism looks like when it fails alone
The claim that the four mechanisms must work
together is easy to assert and worth demonstrating,
because the failure modes of each one in isolation
are exactly the failure modes of the civic
programmes that have come before. A loyalty
programme alone, points for good behaviour, and
nothing more, produces a burst of activity that
decays the moment the novelty fades, because
nothing converts the points into standing the citizen
cares about keeping. We have all seen the reward
app that everyone downloads and no one opens after
a month. The on-ramp without the retention
mechanism is a churn machine.
Social capital and rivalry alone, a leaderboard with
no on-ramp; never fills, because the friction of the
first action is too high for most people to cross
without a reason. The enthusiasts compete;
everyone else watches. This is the inter-school
competition that the same three schools win every
year while the rest never enter. Rivalry without an
on-ramp is an arena with no crowd.
Creator voice alone produces awareness that goes
nowhere, because there is no verified action to
channel the awareness into and no reward economy
to make participation tangible. The campaign trends
for a week and changes nothing, which is the fate of
most awareness campaigns. And the patron
