Answer Book question

Where do I find honest data on a crop's yield and cost?

Kerala Agricultural University's Package of Practices and extension bulletins; ICAR institute publications. CPCRI for coconut, IISR for spices, CTCRI for tubers, IIHR for horticulture; the state Agriculture Department's crop guides; NABARD unit-cost models used by banks; and mandi or cooperative price data. These are written by people who do not sell you inputs. Kerala Rising's crop pages cite them and show where promoter claims diverge.

Short answer

Kerala Agricultural University's Package of Practices and extension bulletins; ICAR institute publications. CPCRI for coconut, IISR for spices, CTCRI for tubers, IIHR for horticulture; the state Agriculture Department's crop guides; NABARD unit-cost models used by banks; and mandi or cooperative price data. These are written by people who do not sell you inputs. Kerala Rising's crop pages cite them and show where promoter claims diverge.

Real life

A farmer compares a promoter's turmeric projection with IISR data and the Krishi Bhavan's local price record. The yield claim is double IISR's, the price is double the local record. He plants a small trial instead of the full acre and saves himself a year's loss.

What this means

Institutional data is conservative, Kerala-specific where KAU is the source, and free. It is the baseline against which any claim is tested.

What to check

KAU Package of Practices for the crop Relevant ICAR institute bulletin NABARD unit cost Local price record from Krishi Bhavan or mandi Kerala Rising crop page with checking date

What people often miss

When this may not be the right answer
